The following sayings of Imam Ali (A.S) are taken from Du'a-e Kumail, trans. N. Hussein Mardi, Chehel Sotoon Theological School: Iran, 1989.

  • The most complete gift of God is a life based on knowledge. 
  • The innumerable fools have made the learned very scarce. 
  • The learned man understands the ignorant for he was once ignorant for he was once ignorant himself.

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Tamam Hamd Uss Allah k liay hai jiss ki aik siffat se doosri siffat afzal nahi k Woh aakhir honay se pahlay awwal aur zaahir honay se pahlay baatin raha ho. Allah k ilaawa jissay bhi aik kaha jaaey ga, wo qillat aur kami men hoga. Iss k siwa har baa-izzat zaleel, har taaqatwar kamzore, har maalik ghulaam aur har jaan’nay waala seekhnay ki manzil men hai (Khutba 63 Nehjul Balagha)


Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Uss (Allah) k ilaawa har qudrat o ikhtiyaar rakhnay waala kabhi qaadir hota hai aur kabhi aajiz aur Uss (Allah) k ilaawa har sun’nay waala khafeef aawaazon ko sun’nay se qaasir hota hai aur bari aawaazain apni goonj se ussay bahraa kar daiti hen aur door ki aawaazain uss tak puhanchti nahi hen aur Uss (Allah) k siwa har daikhnay waala chupay huay rangon aur lateef jimson ko daikhnay se naa beena hota hai. Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Koi Zaahir Uss (Allah) k siwa baatin nahi ho sakta aur koi baatin Uss k siwa zaahir nahi ho sakta.Uss ne apni kissi makhlooq ko iss liay paida nahi kya k Who apni hakoomat ki bunyaadon ko mazboot karay ya zamaanay k halaat aur nataaij se Ussay koi khatra tha ya kasrat par utar aanay waalay shareek ya bulandi men takraanay waalay mad e muqaabil k khilaaf Ussay koi madad haasil karna thi balkay ye saari makhlooq Uss k qabzay men hai aur sab Uss k aajiz o kamzor banday hen (Khutba 63 Nehjul Balagha)


Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Siffeen men apnay ashaab se farmaya: Aey musalmaano Khof e Khuda apnaao. Itmenaan o waqaar ki chaadar orh lo aur apnay daanton ko bheench lo, iss se talwaarain saron se uchat jaaya karti hen. (Khutba 64 Nehjul Balagha)


Siffeen men Hazrat Ali AS ne apnay ashaab se farmaya: Ziraah mukammal karo aur talwaaron ko khainchnay se pahlay niyaam men achi tarah hila jula lo aur dushman ko tirchi nazron se daikhtay raho aur daaen baaen naizon k waar karo aur dushman ko talwaaron ki baar par rakh lo aur talwaaron k saath saath qadamon ko aagay barhaao aur yaqeen rakho k tum Allah k saamnay aur Rasul k chacha zaad bhai k saath kharay ho (Khutba 64 Nehjul Balagha) 


Siffeen men Hazrat Ali AS ne apnay ashaab se farmaya: Baar baar hamla karo aur bhaagnay se sharam karo iss liay k ye naslon tak k liay sharmindagi aur roz e mahshar jahannum ki aag ka baaes hai. (Khutba 64 Nehjul Balagha) 


Siffeen men Hazrat Ali AS ne apnay ashaab se farmaya: Khushi se apni jaanain Allah ko de do aur itmenaan se moat ki jaanib chalo aur (shaamiyon ki) iss bari jamaat aur tanaabon se khinchay huay khaimay ko paish e nazar rakho. Iss k darmayaan hamla karo kyun k shaitaan ussi k aik goshay men chupaa baitha hai. Jiss ne aik taraf to hamlay k liay haath barhaya hua hai aur doosri taraf bhaagnay k liay qadam peechay hata rakha hai. (Khutba 64 Nehjul Balagha) 


Siffeen men Hazrat Ali AS ne apnay ashaab se farmaya: Tum mazbooti se apnay iraaday par jamay raho yahan tak k haq ujaalay ki tarah zaahir ho jaaey. Tum hi ghaalib ho aur Khuda tumharay saath hai. Wo tumharay aamaal ko zaayaa aur barbaad nahi honay daiga (Khutba 64 Nehjul Balagha)


Hazrat Ali AS ne apnay buzdil shiyon se farmaya: Kab tak Mein tumharay saath aisi narmi aur ria’aayat karta rahoon ga jaisi aisay oonton se ki jaati hai jinn ki kohaanain andar se khokli ho chuki hon aur unn phatay puraanay kapron se k jinhain aik taraf se siya jaaey to doosri taraf se phat jaatay hen. Jab bhi shaamiyon k daston men sey koi dasta tum par mandlaata hai to tum sab k sab apnay gharon k darwaazay band kar laitay ho aur iss tarah andar dubak jaatay ho jiss tarah go apnay sooraakh men aur bichoo apnay bhat men. Jiss k tumhaaray jaisay madad gaar hon Uss ne to zaleel hi hona hai (Khutba 67 Nehjul Balagha)


Hazrat Ali AS ne apnay buzdil shiyon se farmaya: Khuda ki qasam gharon k sahan men to tum bari taadaad men nazar aatay ho lekin jhandon k neechay thoray se. Mein achi tarah se jaanta hoon k kiss cheez se tumhari islaah aur kiss cheez se tumhaari be gaanagi ko door kya jaa sakta hai lekin Mein apnay nafs ko bigaar’ kar tumhari islaah karna nahi chaahta. Khuda tumharay chahron ko be aabroo karay aur tumhain bad naseeb karay. Jaisi tum baatil se shanasaai rakhtay ho waisi haq se tumhaari jaan pahchaan nahi aur jitna haq ko mitaatay ho baatil utna tum se nahi dabaya jaata (Khutba 67 Nehjul Balagha)

Aey farsh e zameen k bichaanay waalay aur buland aasmaanon ko baghair sahaaray k roknay waalay, dilon ko achi aur buri fitrat par paida karnay waalay Apni paakeeza rahmatain aur barkatain qaraar day apnay banday aur Rasool Muhammad S.A.W.W k liay jo pahli nabuwwaton ko khatam karnay waalay aur band dilon k kholnay waalay aur haq k zore se aelaan e haq karnay waalay, baatil ki tughyaaniyon ko dabaanay waalay aur zalaalat k hamlon ko kuchalnay waalay thay (Khutba 70 Nehjul Balagha) 


Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Jaisa Rasool S.A.W.W par zimadaariyon ka bojh aaed kya gaya tha, uss ko unhon ne uthaaya aur Allah ki khusnoodiyon ki taraf barhnay k liay mazbooti se jam kar kharay ho gaey. Na aagay barhnay se moo’n mor’a, na iraaday men kamzori ko raah di. Wo Allah ki wahi aur paimaan k muhafiz thay aur Uss k hukmon ko phailaanay ki dhun men lagay rahnay waalay thay yahaan tak k Unhon ne roshni dhoondhnay waalay k liay sholay bharkaa diyay aur andhairay men bhataknay waalay k liay raasta roshan kar dia. Fitnon aur fasaadon men sargarmiyon k baad dilon ne Aap S.A.W.W ki waja se hidayat paai (Khutba 70 Nehjul Balagha)


Jab logon ne Usman ki bayat ka iraada kya to Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Tum jaantay ho k Mujhay auron se ziada khilaafat ka huq puhanchta hai. Khuda ki qasam jab tak musalmaanon k amoor ka nazm o nasq barqaraar rahay ga aur Meri hi zaat zulm o joar ka nishaana banti rahay gi, Mein khaamoshi ikhtiyaar karta rahoon ga taakay iss sabar par Allah se ajr o sawaab talab karoo’n aur iss zaib o zeenat aur iss aaraaish ko thukraa doo’n jiss par tum mittay huay ho (Khutba 72 Nehjul Balagha) 


Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Khuda iss shaks par raham karay k jiss ne hikmat ka koi kalma suna to issay giraah men baandh liya. Hidaayat ki taraf ussay bulaaya gya to dor kar qareeb hua. Saheeh Rahbar ka daaman thaam kar nijaat paai. Allah ko har waqt nazron men rakha aur gunaahon se khof khaaya, amal be riya paish kya. Naik kaam kiay, sawaab ka zakheera jama kya, buri baato’n se ijtinaab barta, saheeh maqsad ko paa liya, apna ajar samait liya, khuwaahishon ka muqaabla kya. Umeedon ko jhutlaaya, sabar ko nijaat ki sawaari bana liya, moat k liay taqwaa ka saaz o saamaan kya. Roshan raah par sawaar hua. Haq ki shaahraah par qadam jamaaey. Zindagi ki muhlat ko ghaneemat jaana, moat ki taraf qadam barhaaey aur amal ka saamaan saath lya. (Khutba 74 Nehjul Balagha)


Bani Ummaya par tabbarra kartay huay Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Bani Ummaya Mujhay Muhammd S.A.W.W ka wirsaa thora thora kar k daitay hen. Khuda ki qasam agar Mein zinda raha to inhain iss tarah jhaar phainkoo’n ga jiss tarah Qasaai, khaak aalooda gosht k tukray se matti jhaar’ daita hai (Khutba 75 Nehjul Balagha) 


Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Aey Allah Tu unn cheezon ko baksh day jinnhain Tu mujh se zyaada jaanta hai (yaani sab kuch baksh day). Agar Mein gunaah ki taraf paltoo’n to Tu apni maghfirat k saath palat. Baar e ILaaha Jiss amal e khair k bajaa laanay ka Mein ne Tujh se waada kya tha, magar Tu ne ussay poora hotay huay na paaya, ussay bhi baksh day. Meray Allah zabaan se niklay huay wo kalamay jinn se Tera qurb chaaha tha magar dil se aisa na chaah saka, unn ko bhi maaf karday. Parwardigaar Tu aankhon k (tanziyaa) ishaaron aur naa shaaista kalmon aur dil ki (buri) khuwaahishon aur zabaan ki khataaon ko maaf farma. (Khutba 76 Nehjul Balagha) 



Hazrat Ali AS ne aik najoomi se farmaya: Kya tumhara ye khayal hai k tum uss waqt ka pata daitay ho k agar koi iss men niklay to iss k liay koi buraai na hogi aur iss lamhay se khabardaar kartay ho k agar koi iss men niklay to ussay nuqsaan dar paish hoga. Jiss ne issay (ilm e najoom) ko saheeh samjha uss ne Quran ko jhutlaaya aur maqsad ko paanay aur museebat ko door karnay men Allah ki madad se be niaaz ho gaya. (Khutba 77 Nehjul Balagha)



Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Aey logo (ILM-e) Najoom k seekhnay se parhaiz karo magar itna (seekh saktay ho) k jiss se khuski aur tari men raastay maaloom kar sako iss liay k (ILM-e) Najoom ka seekhna mustaqbil shanaasi aur ghaib goi ki taraf le jaata hai aur najoomi, hukam men kaahin jaisa hai aur kaahin jaadoogar jaisa aur jaadoogar kaafir jaisa hai aur kaafir ka thikaana jahannum hai. Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Mein iss daar e dunya ki haalaat kya bayaan karoo’n jiss ki ibtedaa gham aur intehaa fana ho. Jiss k halaal men hisaab aur haraam men azaab ho. Yahaan koi maal daar ho to fitnon se waasta aur faqeer ho to gham se saabqa rahta hai. Jo dunya k liay koshish men laga rahta hai uss ki dunyaawi aarzooen barhti hi jaati hen aur jo inn koshishon se haath utha laita hai, dunya khud hi uss se saazgaar ho jaati hai (Khutba 80 Nehjul Balagha)

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Dunya aik aisa ghar hai jiss k liay fana tay shuda amar hai aur iss men basnay waalon k liay yahan se har soorat nikalna hai. Ye dunya sheereen aur shaadaab hai. Apnay chaahnay waalon ki taraf taizi se barhti hai aur dekhnay waalay k dil men sama jaati hai. jo tumharay paas bahtar se bahtar (aakhirat k ) safar ka saamaan ho sakay ussay le kar dunya se chal dainay k liay tayyar ho jaao. Is dunya men apni zaroorat se zyada na chaaho aur jiss se zindagi basar ho sakay, iss se zyada ki khwaahish na karo (Khutba 45 Nehjul Balagha)

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: aey Allah Mein safar ki mushaqqat aur waapsi k gham aur ahl o maal ki bad haali se panaah maangta hoon. Aey Allah Tu hi safar ka saathi aur baal bachon ka muhafiz hai. Aik hi waqt men safar ka saathi aur ghar ka muhafiz Teray ilaawa koi nahi ho sakta kyun k jissay peechay chora jaaey wo saathi nahi ho sakta aur jissay saath liya jaaey ussay peechay nahi chora ja sakta (Khutba 46 Nehjul Balagha)

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Tamam Hamd Uss Allah k liay hai jo chupi hui cheezon ki gahraai men utra hua hai. Is k zaahir aur ghaayib honay ki nishaaniyaan Iss k wajood ka pata daiti hen. Go dekhnay waali aankh se wo nazar nahi aata phir bhi na dekhnay waali aankh iss ka inkaar nahi kar sakti aur jiss ne Iss ka iqraar kiya iss ka dil iss ki haqeeqat ko nahi paa sakta (Khutba 49 Nehjul Balagha)

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Woh (Allah) itna buland o bar tar hai k koi cheez Iss se buland tar nahi ho sakti aur itna qareeb se qareeb tar hai koi shay iss se qareeb tar nahi hai aur na Uss ki bulandi ne Ussay makhlooq se door kar diya hai aur na Uss k qurb ne Ussay doosron ki sataah par laa kar unn k barabar kar dia hai. Uss ne aqlon ko unn ki aakhri hadon se aagaah nahi kiya aur zaroori miqdaar men maarifat haasil karnay k liay unn k aagay parday bhi haayil nahi kiay (Khutba 49 Nehjul Balagha)

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Wo (Allah) zaat aisi hai k Jiss k wajood k nishaanaat iss tarah iss ki gawaahi daitay hen k (zaban se) inkaar karnay waalay ka dil bhi iqraar kiay baghair nahi reh sakta. Allah unn logon ki baaton se buhat buland o bartar hai jo makhlooqaat se Uss ki tashbeeh daitay hen aur Uss k wajood ka inkaar kartay hen (Khutba 49 Nehjul Balagha)

Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Fitnon k honay ka aaghaaz wo nafsaani khwaahishain hoti hen jin ki pairvi ki jaati hai aur wo naey ijaad kiay huay ahkaam jinn men Quran k ahkaam ki mukhalifat ki jaati hai aur jinhain farogh dainay k liay kuch loge deen e ILLAHI k khilaaf baaham aik doosray k madagaar ho jaatay hen. agar baatil, huq ki milaawat se khaali hota to wo dhoondnay waalon se chupa na rehta leken hota yeh hai k kuch idhar se lia jaata hai aur kuch udhar se aur donon ko aapas men ghalat malat kar dia jaata hai. Aik wo jisay Allah ne apnay nafs k hawalay kar dia ho jis k baad wo seedhi raah se hata ho. Biddat ki baton par qurbaan aur gumrahi ki tableegh par mita hua hai. Wo apnay maan’nay waalon k liay fitna aur pichlay logon ki hidayat se hata hua hai. Wo tamam un logon k liay jo is ki zindagi men ya us ki moat k baad us ki pairvi Karen gumraah karnay waala hai. Wo doosron k gunahon ka bojh uthaey huay aur khud apni khataaon men jakra hua hai. Aur doosra wo shaks hai jis ne jaahaalat ki baton ko (idhar udhar se) batoar lia hai. Wo ummat k jaahil afraad men dor dhoop karta hai aur fitnon ki taareekiyon men ghaafil o madhosh para rehta hai aur amn o aashti k faaidon se aankhen band kar laita hai. Chand insaani shakl o soorat se miltay jultay huay logon ne usay aalim ka laqab de rakha hai haalaankay wo aalim nahi hai. Wo aisi baton ko samaitnay k liay mun andheray nikal parta hai jin ka na hona, honay se behtar hai. Yahan tak k wo is ganday paani se sairaab ho laita hai aur be faaida baton ko jama kar laita hai to logon men qaazi ban kar baith jaata hai aur doosron par shubay men reh jaanay waalay masaail k hal karnay ka zimma le laita hai. Agar koi uljha hua masla us k saamnay paish hota hai to apni raaey se us k liay bharti ki farsooda daleelain muhayya kar laita hai aur phir us par yaqeen bhi kar laita hai. Is tarah wo shubhaat k uljhaao men phansa hua hai jis tarah makri khud apnay hi jaalay k andar. Wo khud ye nahi jaanta k us ne sahi hukm dia hai k ghalat. Agar saheeh baat bhi kahi hai to us ko ye andhesha hota hai k kaheen ghalat na ho aur ghalat jawaab ho to us ko yehi tawaqo rehti hai k k shaayad yehi sahi ho. Wo jahaalaton men bhataknay waala jaahil aur apni nazar k dhundhla pan k saath taareekiyon men bhataknay waali sawaariyon par sawaar hai. Na is ne haqeeqat e ilm ko parkha na us ki the tak puhancha. Wo riwaayaat ko is tarah darham barham karta hai jis tarah hawa sookhay huay tinkon ko. Khuda ki qasam wo in masaail k hal karnay ka ahal nahi jo is se poochay jaatay hen na is mansab k qaabil hai jo isay supurd kya gaya hai. Jis cheez ko wo nahi jaanta is cheez ko wo koi qaabil e zikr ilm hi nahi qaraar daita aur jahan tak wo puhanch sakta hai is k aagay wo samajhta hi nahi k koi doosra puhanch sakta hai aur jo baat us ki samajh men nahi aati usay pi jaata hai kyun k wo apni jahaalat ko khud jaanta hai. (na huq bahaey huay) khoon us k naarwaa faislon ki waja se cheekh rahey hen aur ghair mustahiq afraad ko puhanchi hui meeraasain chilla rahi hen. Allah se hi shikwa hai un logon ko jo jahaalat men jeetay hen aur gumraahi men mar jaatey hen. Jab in men se kisi aik k samney koi maamla faislay k liay paish hota hai to wo apni raey se is ka hokum laga daitey hen. Phr wohi masla aisay hi doosrey k samney paish hota hai to wo is pehlay k hukm k khilaf hokum daita hai. Phir ye tamam qaazi apney is khalifa k paas jama hotey hen jis ne inhen qaazi bana rakha hai. Wo in sab ki raaey ko sahi qarar daita hai haalaankey in ka Allah aik Nabi aik aur kitab aik. Kya Allah ne inhen ikhtilaf ka hukum dya tha aur ye ikhtilaf kar k US ka hukum baja laatey hen ya IS ne to ikhtilaaf se yaqeenan mana kya hai aur ye ikhtilaf kar k amadan IS ki nafarmaani karna chahtey hen. Ya ye k Allah ne deen ko adhura chor dya tha aur in se takmeel k liay haath bataney ka khwahishmand hua tha ya ye k ye Allah k shareek thay k inhen IS k ahkaam men dakhal dainey ka huq ho aur IS par laazim ho k WO is par razaamand rahey ya ye k Allah ne to deen mukammal utara tha magar is k Rasul ne is k punhchaney aur adaa karney men kotaahi kI thi. Jo talabgaar ho magar sust raftaar usay bhi tawaqo ho sakti hai magar jo (jaan boojh k) kotaahi karnay waala ho usay to dozakh hi men girna hai. Daaen baaen gumraahi ki raahen hen aur darmiyaani raasta hi siraat e mustaqeem hai. Is raastey par Allah ki hamesha rehnay waali kitab aur Nabuwwat k aasaar hen. Hazrat Ali AS ne farmaya: Jo haq k muqablay men khara hota hai wo tabaah ho jaata hai aur insaan ki jahaalat is se barh kar kya hogi k wo apni qadr o manzilat ko na pehchaanay. تم اپنی خواہشوں پر قابو رکھو،اور جو مشاغل تمہارے لئے حلال نہیں ہیں اُن میں صَرف کرنے میں بُخل)کنجوسی) کرو)
رعایا کے لئے اپنے دل کے اندر رحم و رافت اور لطف و محبت کو جگہ دو ۔ ان کے لئے پھاڑ کھانے والے درندہ نہ بن جاؤ۔(2)
تمہیں کسی کو معاف کردینے پر پچھتانا نہیں چاہیے اور نہ سزا دینے میں اترانا چاہیے۔(3)
کبھی یہ نہ کہنا کہ میں حاکم بنایا گیا ہوں،لہٰذا میرے حکم کے آگے سر تسلیم خم ہونا چاہیے کیونکہ یہ دل کو فساد پیدا کرنے ،دین کو کمزور بنانے اور بربادیوں کے قریب لانے کا سبب ہے اور کبھی حکومت کی وجہ سے تم میں تمکنت یا غرور پیدا ہو تو اپنے سے بالا تر اللہ کے ملک کی عظمت کو  دیکھو اور خیال کرو کہ وہ تم پر وہ قدرت رکھتا ہے کہ جو خود تم اپنے آپ پر نہیں رکھتے ۔(4)
یاد رکھوں کے حاکم کو اپنی حکومت پر پوراعتماد اُسی وقت کرنا چاہیے جبکہ وہ ان سے حُسن سلوک کرتا ہو ان پر بوجھ نہ لادے اور اُنہیں ایسی ناگوار چیزوں پر مجبور نہ کرے جو اُن کے بس میں نہ ہوں۔(5)
حکمرانو ں کے لئے سب سے بڑی آنکھوں کی ٹھنڈک اس میں ہے کہ شہروں میں عدل و انصاف برقرار رہے اور رعایا کی محبت ظاہر ہوتی رہے ۔(6)
نا حق خون بہا کر اپنے اقتدار کو مضبوط کرنے کی کبھی کوشش نہ کرنا کیونکہ یہ چیز اقتدار کو کمزور اور کھوکھلا کر دینے والی ہوتی ہے۔(7)
خُدا کے نزدیک یہ بڑی ناراضگی کی چیز ہے کہ تم جو کہو اُسے کر نا پاؤ۔(8)
اس بات کا خیال رکھو کہ رعایا سے عرصہ تک رُوپوشی اختیار نہ کرنا کیونکہ حکمرانوں کا رعایا سے چُھپ کر رہنا ایک طرح کی تنگ دلی اور معاملات سے بے خبر رہنے کا سبب ہے اور یہ روپوشی انھیں بھی ان امور پر مطلع ہونے سے روکتی ہے کہ جن سے وہ ناواقف ہیں۔(9)

His Last Will and Testament
Imam Ali's (AS) last will to his sons Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS) following a fatal blow on his head during morning prayers by Ibn Muljim (A Kharijite): 
My advice to you is to be conscious of Allah and steadfast in your religion. Do not yearn for the world, and do not be seduced by it. Do not resent anything you have missed in it. Proclaim the truth; work for the next world. Oppose the oppressor and support the oppressed.

I advise you, and all my children, my relatives, and whosoever receives this message, to be conscious of Allah, to remove your differences, and to strengthen your ties. I heard your grandfather, peace be upon him, say: "Reconciliation of your differences is more worthy than all prayers and all fasting."

Fear Allah in matters concerning orphans. Attend to their nutrition and do not forget their interests in the middle of yours.

Fear Allah in your relations with your neighbors. Your Prophet often recommended them to you, so much so that we thought he would give them a share in inheritance.

Remain attached to the Quran. Nobody should surpass you in being intent on it, or more sincere in implementing it.

Fear Allah in relation to your prayers. It is the pillar of your religion.

Fear Allah in relation to His House; do not abandon it as long as you live. If you should do that you would abandon your dignity.

Persist in jihad in the cause of Allah, with your money, your souls, and your tongue.

Maintain communication and exchange of opinion among yourselves. Beware of disunity and enmity. Do not desist from promoting good deeds and cautioning against bad ones. Should you do that, the worst among you would be your leaders, and you will call upon Allah without response.

O Children of Abdul Muttalib! Do not shed the blood of Muslims under the banner: The Imam has been assassinated! Only the assassin should be condemned to death.

If I die of this stroke of his, kill him with one similar stroke. Do not mutilate him! I have heard the Prophet, peace be upon him, say: "Mutilate not even a rabid dog."

In the 40th year of Hijri, in the early hours of the morning of 19th Ramadhan, Imam Ali (AS) was struck with a poisoned sword by the Kharijite Ibn Muljim (may the curse of Allah be upon him) while leading prayers in the Masjid of Kufa. He was martyred on the 21st day of Ramadhan 40 A.H. and buried in Najaf-ul-Ashraf. He was born in the House of Allah, the Ka'ba, and martyred in the House of Allah, Masjid-e-Kufa. The Lion of Allah, the most brave and gentle Muslim after the Holy Prophet (pbuh&hf) himself, began his glorious life with devotion to Allah and His Messenger, and ended it in the service of Islam.

"And do not speak of those who are slain in the the Way of Allah as dead; nay, they are alive, but you perceive not." Qur'an 2:154


Knowledge and Ignorance

In reply to some one who posed Imam Ali (as) a difficult question, Imam Ali (as) said : 'Ask in order to understand, and do not ask in order to find fault, for surely the ignorant man who wants to learn resembles a man of knowledge, and surely a man of knowledge who wants to be difficult resembles an ignorant man who wants to find fault. '


The Station of the men of Knowledge

The man of knowledge is the one who recognizes that what is known is very little compared to what is not known, and as a result he considers himself ignorant, and accordingly he increases his efforts to know more by going out in search of knowledge.


The Purity and the Nobility of Knowledge

Do not talk about knowledge with the foolish so that they deny you, nor with the ignorant so that they find you oppressive, but talk about it with those of its people whom you meet who will accept it and understand it.


Knowledge and Acting on it

O you who carry knowledge around with you; are you only carrying it around with you ? For surely knowledge belongs to who ever knows and then acts accordingly, so that his
action corresponds to his knowledge. There will be a people who will carry knowledge around with them, but it will not pass beyond their shoulders. Their inner most thoughts will contradict what they display in public, and their actions will contradict what they know.


The purity and nobility of knowledge

When a dead person is placed in his grave, four kinds of fire will cover him, but then the prayer will come and put one of them out, and the fast will come and put another one of them out, and then charity will come and put another one out, and knowledge will come and put the forth one out, and it will say : 'If I had come sooner, I would a have put all of them out, and given you delight for I am with you now, and you'll not see anything else distressing.


On the Heart

I am amazed at the heart of man: It possesses the substance of wisdom as well as the opposites contrary to it ... for if hope arises in it, it is brought low by covetousness: and if covetousness is aroused in it, greed destroys it. If despair possesses it, self piety kills it: and if it is seized by anger, this is intensified by rage. If it is blessed with contentment, then it forgets to be careful; and if it is filled with fear, then it becomes preoccupied with being cautious. If it feels secure , then it is overcome by vain hopes; and if it is given wealth, then its independence makes it extravagant. If want strikes it, then it is smitten by anxiety. If it is weakened by hunger, then it gives way to exhaustion; and if it goes too far in satisfying its appetites, then its inner becomes clogged up. So all its shortcomings are harmful to it, and all its excesses corrupt it.

There are four things that make the heart die: wrong action followed by wrong action, playing around with foolish people, spending a lot of time with women, and sitting with the dead. Then they asked Imam Ali: 'And who are the dead, O Commander of the believers?' He replied: 'Every slave who follows his desires.'

Surely want is a trial, and having sickness of the body is more difficult to bear than indigence, and having a sickness of the heart is more difficult to bear than having a sickness of the body. Surely being very wealthy is a blessing, and having a healthy body is better than being very wealthy, and having awe of Allah in your heart is better than having a healthy body.

Surely hearts have desires, and they turn towards, and they turn away ... so approach them by means of what they desire and what they turn towards, for surely if the heart is forced to do some thing against its will, it goes blind.

A person's intellect becomes apparent through his dealings, and a man's character is known by the way he exercises authority. The intellect is a king and characteristics are its subjects, so if it is weak in governing them, disorder takes place.

The intellect is better than desire, for the intellect makes you a king over your destiny, and desire makes you a slave of your destiny.

The intellect is a natural disposition which learns from experience.

The intellect is what arrives at what is correct through reasoning, and recognizes what has not yet happened through what has already taken place. Use your intellect to understand something when you hear about the intellect that examines, that is, and not just the intellect that repeats what it hears, for surely there are many who repeat the knowledge that they hear, and there are few who examine it.

The one who has an intellect longs to be like the righteous people so that he can be of one of them, and he loves them so that he can be united with them in his love, even if he falls short in emulating their actions.

The one who has an intellect does not openly display it except in one of two situations: when he is furthest away from seeking something in the world, and when he is furthest away from abandoning it.

Surely hated adversity has final objectives in which it will inevitably end, so the one who has an intellect should try to sleep over it until this happens, for surely any attempt to stop it before it has come to an end will only intensify that hated diversity even more.

The first opinion of the person of intellect is the last opinion of an ignorant person.

The one who has an intellect finds harshness of life amongst persons of intellect more agreeable than a life of ease amongst the foolish.


The Station of men of Knowledge

Know that the slaves of Allah are those who seek to preserve knowledge of Him, safeguarding what safeguards it, and lettings its springs flow freely. They are united by friendship, and they meet with love, and they drink from the cup that quenches their thirst, and they go on with their thirst satisfied. They are not troubled by doubt, and they are not quick to backbite. It is on this basis that their natural disposition and character rest, and on this is based their love, and by this they are united. They are like seeds that have been assessed and selected, some to be kept and some to be thrown away, identified through purification, and refined through clarification.


This World and the Next

Imam Ali (as) wrote to Salman al Farsi (ra) : To continue, surely, the likeness of this world is that of a snake: it is soft to touch, and deadly poisonous. The ignorant child is distracted by it, and the one with understanding and intellect is cautious of it. So turn away from what fascinates you in it, for how little of it stays with you.


The Life Transaction ( Religion ) of Islam

I am making a connection which no one has made before me: Islam is submission, and submission is certainty, and certainty is the affirmation of the truth, and affirmation of the truth is acknowledgement, and acknowledgement is performance of what is obligatory, and performance of what is obligatory is appropriate action.
